PRISM: Is there a mystic arc?
A theoretical, textual, and empirical investigation into patterns of destabilisation and integration within the process of contemplative development.
The project aims to investigate a specific sequence of experiences which is hypothesized as central to mysticism, conceived as a developmental process. This arc, which the project calls the Standard Pattern (SP), typically begins with one or several breakthrough experience(s), often described as “openings”, “mystical experiences”, or “spiritual awakenings”. What follows is usually but not always a period of destabilization, often accompanied by heightened spirituality, shifts in worldviews, unpleasant mindstates, and impaired function. Over time, individuals tend to reach an abiding new equilibrium of clarity, balance, and insight. Phasic “oscillation” between negative and positive poles has been reported to occur cyclically in some individuals. Can such a sequence indeed be found across mystical texts and real-world practitioners’ journeys? Can a shared description be developed and diverse theories be used to better understand its underlying dynamics?
